Socratic circle discussion
Our class had a great discussion on the Texas conservatives winning the recent curriculum change. A lot of great points were brought up and discussed. Emotions were flaring up. The conversation seemed to base around the topics of what is and is not opinion and changing history with bias. I didn't really like that people were saying that everything is an opinion. However, it was a good point. They thought that if someone thinks the holocaust was bad, then that is their opinion. They also thought that teaching that slavery was bad is also an opinion. This is occasionally true, however it is just a technicality. Humans are wired with thoughts telling them what is right and wrong. That should be included as a factor. We all know deep down that the holocaust was wrong. We are wired to realize this. Anyone who likes Nazis either don't know the facts or are not mentally stable. We have laws that are "based on opinion". If everything is an opinion then the law telling us that murder is bad and we shouldn't murder people is an opinion. It just frustrates me to hear people talking about everything being an opinion. That was kind of off the subject of the paper, but this is a blog on our discussion and that is what we discussed. Getting back to the paper... We also talked about the Conservatives changing history in the circle. I don't think they were changing history, but I think they were balancing out the liberal and conservative influence in history. Public schoolbooks seem to be loaded with liberal views, and it is nice that they are balancing it out in Texas. I don't think what they were doing was wrong because liberals have already done it. Thanks for reading and happy holidays!

I agree with you on how everything isn’t an opinion and that there is facts out there. I also got frustrated with everyone saying everything you say is your opinion and that word was just abused in the discussion. I like how you used the law as an example for the opinions it made it clear for what you were trying to say. I also agree that everyone knows killing someone is bad. Everyone deep down does know what’s right and what’s wrong; no matter who you are you know. I didn’t really understand the topic when we had the discussions in class but I now understand what is going on in Texas on textbooks. I like what I read it was very understandable and I liked how you knew you were off topic but you got right back on. Keep up the great work Brady your doing amazing! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I liked how you mentioned that our laws are based on opinion. And even though its opinion I agree with you that the Holocaust was bad. Laws are created by humans, so they will always have opinion in them because everyone has different views. I think you did a good job on your observations. I don't know much about the conservative textbook bias because I didn't have that article, but I think that textbooks should voice out the claims in a more liberal manner. By liberal I don't mean Democratic Party, but more on minority triumphs in American History because I think that the history of America should not be limited to just Caucasian people but to all ethnic groups since America itself is a giant melting pot of different cultures and languages. Thats why America is the best!!
ReplyDeleteI liked the logic behind a good majority of your beliefs. I think that Your whole thing on how everything is an opinion is very true, and it is a technicality in the system. Deep down inside people know right from wrong, however it is possible for some people to silence there consciences and live life without a rational thought in their bones. This is where i get scared for the future of myself and the rest of humanity. Like you brought up, there are people out there who see the holocaust as something worthy of praise and in fact, this group of peopole i believe may be growing. This is why i am scared for our futures. if people can be so heartless and feel no remorse or empathy for the events that occured under Hitler's reign, then what are these same people capable of today???
